Alec Guinness is in top form in this dark comedy about an unexceptional, practically invisible salaryman who decides to take one last vacation upon learning that he only has a short time to live. The seemingly innocuous, inauspicious George Bird is exactly the kind of role that Sir Alec was born to play. Bird goes through some big changes throughout this seemingly slight entertainment, but Guinness makes every one of them believable and consistently goes for more than the easy laugh.

Be forewarned that the film does not end on a happy note. I was expecting to be entertained–and I was–but I was surprised at how moved I was by the ending (which is both sudden and ironic). Although Last Holiday isn’t as well known as many of Guinness’ Ealing-era comedies (most notably 1948’s Kind Hearts and Coronets), it should be. It really isn’t a slight entertainment at all. On the contrary, it’s more substantial than most, dealing as successfully as it does with the notion that it isn’t how long you live but how well, and features one of this great actor’s finest, most indelible performances. The colorful supporting cast (including the ubiquitous Wildrid Hyde-White and Bernard Lee of James Bond’s “M” fame) is with him all the way. A keeper.

A young Alec Guinness stars in this clever story of a mild-mannered, average sort of fellow who is told by his doctor that he has only days, perhaps weeks left to life. On medical advice, Guinness quits his job, liquidates his life savings, and goes off to a posh country resort on one last, luxuriously bittersweet holiday. Naturally, once he’s given up all hope, everything in his life starts coming up roses: mistaken as a man of means by the hotel’s inquisitive clientele, Guinness finds all sorts of new creative, financial and romantic opportunities arising out of nowhere. J. B. Priestley’s script is in part a wry, piercing comment on Great Britain’s class-bound society, where initiative and imagination were stifled by prejudice and regimentation… Only because he feels he has nothing left to lose does Guinness’s George Bird work up the nerve to give business tycoons and Lords of Parliament a piece of his mind; once he does they recognize him as a man of great standing. Politics aside, though, this is also a very entertaining and somewhat sad little comedy, with an twist ending that happy, happy Hollywood wouldnt touch with a ten-foot pole. Recommended.

I remember “discovering” this movie as a teenager; I came across it one night on Channel 7 in NYC, at around 3 in the morning.

It was love at first sight.

Vincent Price plays Dr. Anton Phibes, an organ-playing Super-Genius, who seeks revenge on the 9 people he holds responsible for the death of his Wife: The 8 Doctors and the Nurse who failed to save her after an accident. Phibes and his lovely assistant, Vulnavia, operate out of a secret lair, complete with a ballroom and clockwork orchestra of Phibes’ own creation, and as the film begins, their plan is already well underway: they will kill the “responsible” parties using the 10 Biblical plagues of The Pharoes- Boils, Bats, Blood, Frogs, Beasts, The Death of the First-Born, Locusts, Rats, Hail, and Darkness…..Let the fun begin….

What is so great about this movie is that, in my opinion, there ARE no other movies like this one. It’s a surreal period-piece (The film takes place in the 1920’s), that deals with grusome murders, has a wicked sense of humor, and a villain straight out of a comic-book (Comic readers will find Phibes to be a cross between Doctor Doom and The Joker). The sets and locations are great, and Vincent Price is superb, as usual. You can tell he had a great time playing the good Doctor. The ending is weirdly satisfying, and again, is one-of-a-kind. The cast is superb, and Joseph Cotten is a great foil for Price. Their scene in the operating theater is phenomenal.

The DVD is short on extras, just a Theatrical trailer, which is a hoot. And anyone who has had to suffer through awful-looking Television airings will love the crisp look of the film in Widescreen.

Anyone who is a fan of either Horror movies or Vincent Price MUST add this film to their collection. As the Policeman says early in the film, “There are a lot of strange people practicing medicine these days!”

Vincent Price will always be remembered best for his numerable horror film roles. While many of these films may be less than stellar, occaisionaly one would come along that outshone all the others. “The Abominable Dr. Phibes” is one such little gem.

Price plays Dr. Anton Phibes, a musician and all around twisted genius with a mission. Phibes is bent upon killing off the team of doctors who failed to save the life of his beloved wife after a rather nasty automobile accident. Of course, being a twisted genius, Phibes doesn’t go about exacting his revenge like any other normal homicidal maniac. He’s decided to take the Old Testament plagues visited upon Pharaoh and Egypt and adapt them for his own nefarious purposes. The way Phibes uses the plagues of blood, bats, boils, hail etc. I’ll leave for you to see.

Now, if you go into this film expecting a straightforward horror film, with lots of blood and gore, you may be disappointed. Director Robert Fuest, as one reviewer has already pointed out, had a stint on “The Avengers”, and he tells this story in the same tongue in cheek style that was so typical (and endearing) of that classic TV series. Also, the lavish deco designed sets lend the film a stylish and sometimes surreal look and feel. The clockwork musician sequences are a notable example of this stylish/surreal imagery. There are also some wonderful performances here -Joseph Cotten as the senior physician for whom Phibes saves as the last of his victims, Virginia North as the ethereal and lethal Vulnavia, and Terry-Thomas turns in a nicely comic performance as one of Phibes’ earliest victims.

The really knockout performance here must go to Vincent Price as Dr. Phibes. Price manages to strike a fine balance between the camp and yet menacing role of Phibes without over playing either side. A wonderful little story element in the film has Phibes’ vocal apparatus having been destroyed in the accident that claimed his wife. In order to speak he has constructed a device that allows him to attach a plug into the side of his neck (he also eats and drinks through this hole) while his voice emerges from something that looks like an old megaphone speaker off of a Victrola phonograph player! This meant that Price had to record his lines first and then act out through facial,eye, and body movements the emotion of his words as his famous velvety tones emerge out of the speaker. Not an easy trick for any actor. Price is also able to give Phibes a sympathetic slant as well. Phibes is certainly a murderous maniac and misguided in his quest for revenge but Price allows us to see a human side as Phibes sits and talks to a photograph of his dead wife. Phibes was obviously obsessively in love with his wife and its this same obsession that drives him to do the twisted things he does. This powerful love of Phibes’ also gives the character a hint of necrophilia which becomes particularly apparent during the films finale.

All in all this is a wonderfully quirky little film. Great production values, fine script and performances make this an above average horror movie. And if you’ve ever wondered what it means for something to be “camp” then this is a fun way to learn the meaning of the word.

This DVD is my three year old’s very favorite! We watch it everyday! There are 8 episodes in this DVD. It’s great for her attention span.
If you’ve never seen Oswald, you don’t know what you’re missing! Oswald and his friends are amusing even for adults! There is nice soft music in the background. This is such a great dvd, my daughter has memorized all the little songs that Oswald sings and performs them for family and friends!
Get this for your preschooler, you won’t be disappointed!

Elizabeth and Rodney (Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber) are spending the summer with their tycoon grandfather D.J. Mulrooney (Walter Brennan). Stopping off in the Redwood Forest for a picnic, Elizabeth meets Jasper (Tom Lowell) and Knobbie (Brennan once more), who claim to be the last surviving gnomes.

Promising to help them find more of their own kid, D.J. and the children bundle up Knobbie and Jasper, their destination the Virgin Forest many miles away. A stop at a motel blows their cover and the gnomes are abducted by freak show owner Horatio Quaxton (Sean McClory). The plot thickens when D.J. is thrown into a madhouse!

The story quickly rushes to it’s eventful conclusion with Jasper finding the girl-gnome of his dreams (Cami Sebring).

Too bad the movie’s in full-screen but never mind. Alas the Disney people are doing this with more and more frequency in their back-catalogue titles.

An entertaining tale with the MARY POPPINS kids! Based on the book by Upton Sinclair. With Ed Wynn, Maudie Prickett, Norman Grabowski, Ellen Corby, Susan Flannery and Richard Deacon.

I accidentally recorded this film on VHS video tape about seventeen years ago from TV and I have taken special care of it ever since. The fact that it is finally being released on DVD is like a dream come true. It’s one of those rare movies that capture the innocence of a bygone era, a time when excellent, feel good, family movies were made. It is with such movies that Disney defined the term family entertainment and that made a whole lot of difference to those of us that grew up with these films. Call it nostalgia if you will but movies are about entertainment and to me entertainment means that you can let yourself go for 90 minutes or so and travel to the faraway places in your imagination where the burdens of everyday life are nonexistent. Any movie that can achieve this is- to me- well worth a place in my collection. The Gnome Mobile is definitely one of those films and I would be a happy man if my son would grow up watching films like TGM rather than all the violent stuff that is so popular among youngsters nowadays.

Get A Christmas Carol: The Musical Online Right Now!

A musical setting for Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a natural, and this holiday TV-movie (based on the Broadway version) generously crams music into its quick spin through the venerable story. Kelsey Grammer uses his musical pipes (and some of his “master thespian” style of acting) as Ebenezer Scrooge, the man whose miserliness needs no introduction here. There’s some experienced musical-comedy talent in the cast, from small roles to large, with expert stuff from Jesse L. Martin (who was in Rent, the Broadway musical, before he joined the Law & Order team) as the ghost of Christmas Present and Jane Krakowski as the ghost of Christmas Past. Jason Alexander, another TV person with a background in stage musicals, does deftly as the chain-rattling Jacob Marley’s ghost (and his number is one of the most tuneful of the mixed bag of songs). Alan Menken, the veteran tunesmith of Beauty and the Beast fame, contributes the music, with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime); the bigger numbers are spirited but a little rote. (The Styne-Merrill songs from a wackier version of the story, Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol, are a more memorable bunch.) This version moves so quickly across the main points of the story that Scrooge’s redemption feels a tad rushed, but maybe the songs are supposed to be the point. Still, the razzle-berry dressing is missed. –Robert Horton

The overwhelming conclusion of this 94-minute movie is that being a prophet is tough. Jeremiah (Patrick Dempsey) is repeatedly imprisoned and beaten, dropped into a muddy well face first, and forced to witness the stabbing death of his fiancee. And all for repeating messages from God, most of them urging the Judeans to submit to Babylon’s King Nebuchadnezzar (Klaus Maria Brandaur). Dempsey gives an earnest performance, ably assisted by a strong supporting cast. Writer-director Harry Winer spends the first part of the film on Jeremiah’s formative years of visions, moving on to his contentious relationship with King Zedekiah, who ultimately–and tragically–listened to his general (Oliver Reed) rather than the prophet. This bleak film ends with the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians and Jeremiah’s self-comforting thought that the city will rise again. Parents should be aware of some disturbing violence: in addition to Jeremiah’s fiancee’s murder, Zedekiah sees his sons fatally stabbed before he is killed. –Kimberly Heinrichs
